If you’re planning a trip to Melbourne, there is one experience that usually sits right at the top of the bucket list: the Phillip Island Penguin Parade. There is something truly magical about sitting on a beach at sunset, watching hundreds of the world’s smallest penguins (the appropriately named "Little Penguins") waddle out of the surf and head home to their burrows.
But here’s the thing, because it’s such a world-famous event, it can get crowded, cold, and a little overwhelming if you don’t have a plan.
At Melbourne Australia Tours, we’ve been taking groups down to the island for years. We’ve seen the parade in the pouring rain, the heat of summer, and everything in between. To help you make the most of your visit, we’ve put together this ultimate insider’s guide.
How can we assist you today? Whether you're looking for Phillip Island day tour info or just some travel tips, read on!
1. Choosing Your Viewing Experience
Most people don't realize there are actually three different ways to watch the penguins. Choosing the right one can make or break your night.
General Viewing
This is the standard tiered seating overlooking Summerland Beach. It’s the most affordable option and gives you a great panoramic view of the beach.
- Pro Tip: If you choose this, arrive at least 1 hour early (sometimes 2 in peak season) to snag a spot at the front or near the stairs.
Penguin Plus
This is a premium area located away from the main stands. It’s modeled after the natural contours of the island and limited to fewer people.
- Why we love it: You are much closer to the penguin "highways", the tracks they use to get from the water to their nests. You’ll see them waddling right past your feet!
Underground Viewing
This is the ultimate "VIP" experience. You’re literally below ground level with a window at penguin-eye height.
- Best for: Photography lovers and those who hate the cold. Since you're indoors and behind glass, you’re protected from the wind, and you get a perspective of the penguins that is totally unique.

2. The "Secret" Viewing Spot (The Boardwalks)
Here is the biggest tip we give our guests: Don’t spend the whole night in the stands.
While the initial "emergence" from the water is exciting to watch from the seating area, the best action happens about 15–20 minutes later on the boardwalks. Once the penguins leave the beach, they have to navigate the grassy hills to find their burrows.
If you leave the stands and walk slowly back along the wooden boardwalks towards the visitor center, you will be just inches away from penguins stopping for a rest, calling out to their mates, or even having a little "territory dispute" with a neighbor.
Please give us some info to serve you better if you have mobility concerns, as the boardwalks are fully accessible and offer a much more intimate encounter than the main platforms.
3. What to Wear: The Coastal Chill is Real
We cannot stress this enough: Phillip Island is cold.
Even if it was a 30°C day in Melbourne, the temperature at Summerland Beach drops significantly as soon as the sun goes down. You are sitting on a south-facing beach with wind coming straight off the Southern Ocean (next stop: Antarctica!).
Our Packing Checklist:
- Layers: Think thermal tops, sweaters, and a heavy jacket.
- Windbreaker: A waterproof or windproof outer layer is a lifesaver.
- Beanie and Scarf: You’ll thank us when the sea breeze kicks in.
- Blanket: If you're driving yourself, bring a rug to sit on or wrap around your legs.
4. Guided Tour vs. Driving Yourself: Why the Pros Win
We often get asked if it’s worth booking one of our Phillip Island private day tours or just renting a car. While we love a good road trip, there are a few "dark truths" about driving to the Penguin Parade that many visitors don't consider.
The Night Drive Danger
The Penguin Parade finishes after dark. The drive back to Melbourne takes about 2 hours, mostly through regional roads. This is peak time for Australian wildlife (kangaroos and wallabies) to be active. Hitting a roo at 100km/h is a very real danger for tired drivers who aren't used to local conditions.
Fatigue
After a full day of sightseeing and then sitting in the cold evening air, most people are exhausted. Do you really want to navigate two hours of dark highway back to the city? On our tours, you can just lean back in our modern, air-conditioned vehicles and nap all the way to your hotel door.
Insider Knowledge
Our guides don't just drive the bus. They know exactly which boardwalk has the most activity that night. They know the history of the island, where to spot wild wallabies along the way, and the best places to grab a quick dinner before the parade starts.

5. Important Rules to Remember
The Penguin Parade is a conservation site, and the safety of the little penguins is the #1 priority.
- NO PHOTOS OR VIDEOS: This is the big one. Flash photography can blind and disorient the penguins, and even "no flash" digital screens can scare them. Security is strict about this. Put the phone away and just enjoy the moment with your own eyes.
- Keep Your Distance: Never try to touch a penguin. They might look like cute plush toys, but they have sharp beaks and are wild animals!
- Be Quiet: Penguins are timid. Keeping your voice down helps them feel safe enough to come ashore.
6. Beyond the Penguins: Making a Day of It
Phillip Island isn't just about the parade. If you're coming with us on one of our Melbourne day tours, we usually make a full day of it.
- The Nobbies: Dramatic cliffside boardwalks with views of Seal Rocks.
- Churchill Island: A historic farm where you can see sheep shearing and working dogs.
- Wildlife Parks: If you want to hand-feed a kangaroo or see a koala up close before the penguins come out, we can make that happen.
